Asian Cinema Calling – Subcultures, Countercultures, and all them other cultures…

‘OY JUE, I thought there were gonna be some films!?’
What what? Yes films… the Asian Cinema Week series will be opening with a screening of Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar!

Yangon Calling is a documentary movie about the Burmese Punk Rock underground, directed by Berlin based filmmakers Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke.

For young Burmese, punk provides a way to stand up against the pressures they have to face in their day-to-day lives. In the 90’s, sailors brought the first punk rock cassettes into the isolated country. Since then a scene with several hundred followers has emerged in Yangon.

Over the course of six weeks, the filmmakers accompanied a group of notable punks to their homes, met their friends and families, went along with them to work in a tailor shop and tattoo studio, checked out their rehearsal rooms and hung at secret concerts. They spoke with punks who had sat in jail and fought their frustrations with heroin. Yangon Calling is a film about life, about personal tragedy and the struggle for freedom.

The screening will be accompanied with a talk by Alexander Dluzak.

Alexander Dluzak (1976, Hamburg/Germany) lives as a filmmaker and TV journalist in Berlin and Tokyo. He specializes in reporting about art, music and subculture, with a strong focus on Asia.

Carsten Piefke (1970, in Berlin/Germany) lives as a filmmaker and video editor in his hometown Berlin. He has directed three documentary movies and edited countless movies about various cultural topics.

Asian Cinema Week Rears Its Head

After a very successful inaugural year we are bringing back Asian Cinema Week. Look out for inspiring new films from the budding film industries of far-flung territories including Myanmar, Nepal and hopefully even North Korea…

In 2013 Asian Cinema Week was a bold call to cinematic arms. Including feature films, documentaries and shorts from all over Asia (alongside live music, panels and various other interactive events), the inaugural edition carved out a space where local filmmakers and fans alike could collide, share ideas and develop their works. Asian Cinema Week is an outstanding platform for exposing the best of Asian underground cinema.

Highlight from 2013: Mongolian Bling
2013 was a big year for the documentary format. One of the highlights of JUE was an in-depth study of the Mongolian underground hip-hop scene called Mongolian Bling. The China premiere was followed by a Q&A session with the director, and performances by some of the starring artists including hip-hop producer/rapper Quiza, MC Nasty Ray and Hanggai (杭盖) – one of the most active Mongolian bands in China.

Wooozy Community Film Series jives with JUE

We expect Wooozy.cn – a major source of info, insights, and top tips on what artists to look out for in China – will be organising a screening for us!

Wooozy.cn is like China’s Pitchfork, providing the latest news, reviews and media content on the music scene here. It is run by, and exists exclusively for die-hard music fans; the trendsetters who pride themselves in staying ahead of their peers. Unlike any ordinary blog, Wooozy.cn also organizes offline events. These include screenings of specialist films (with the editorial team voluntarily contributing subtitles) and intimate showcases around live houses in Shanghai.

The latest edition of the Wooozy.cn Community Film Series drew the attention of Global Times, which interviewed Fanmu – Wooozy.cn’s Chief Editor. He highlighted just how involved these projects can be, and explained the motivations behind launching the series:

Nowadays people are immersed in the Internet and online social media. There are few chances for them to gather around and communicate face to face. So we called our event ‘Community Film’ because we want everyone to feel like they’re part of a community and are connected.

These projects are rarely for profit; the value behind them lies in the experience. Fans are able to meet and take part in self-discovery through music. We’re really proud of what the Wooozy.cn team have achieved so far and can’t wait to see what they bring to JUE 2014!

JUE Colours

最后,我们当然不会忘了由Jing A Brewing Co.携手Jellymon/Re-Up.

============================================================================

You may have noticed we’ve got a bit of a rainbowey-thing going with our visuals this year. We don’t blame you for assuming our designer’s been eating too many skittles. But the reality is, JUE has events that span 7 distinct disciplines. These are:

JUE | Music

JUE | Performance

JUE | Film

JUE | Talks

JUE | Literary Events

JUE | Community

JUE | Art

We’ll be bringing back old favourites including the JUE market, Asian Cinema Week, Bike to JUE, JUE NEXT GEN and more. Also expect the return of some of our key partners, which include Beijing Improv, The Bookworm, and Natooke.

New kids on the block include Groove Entertainment; experts in dance performance who will help to get Shanghai’s city-dwellers jigging, Balance Art; an organisation that operates a collection of integrated centers for a variety of stage-based and visual art forms, World Culture Open (WCO); a non-profit organisation promoting cultural exchange, sharing and support at both global and local levels, and more! Oh, also look out for a special beer we’ll be serving up as part of a collaboration between Jing A Brewing Co. and Jellymon / Re-Up.
