JUE | Music + Art 2014: Who Am I? Where Is This Place? What Happened To March?

And So I Watch You from Afar,

Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 11.57.35

Electric East.

Two cities, over 100 events, a swathe of artists from the local to the internationally renowned, amazing support from fans, and a single question: where did the energy come from? Thanks for helping spread the word and supporting your local creative communities. JUE | Music + Art is a platform: an opportunity for many projects to come together to form a collective that’s more significant than their intricate individual parts. JUE isn’t a thing that exists outside ourselves, it is us, it’s knowing each other.

Let’s take a look at a few memorable moments from JUE | Music + Art 2014:

Music
Performances from the likes of UK rapper Blak Twang, Singapore’s MONSTER CAT, And So I Watch You from Afar, L.A. electro-pop act Baths, and Chinese Wuhan stalwarts Hua Lun, ensured that there was a live show for everyone’s tastes.

Performance
A JUE favourite was Sight/Unseen, which saw its China debut in Shanghai and Beijing. Presented by founding member of Sonic youth Lee Ranaldo and his wife Leah Singer, Sight/Unseen was a multimedia performance work that brought together live music, performance, and film in a single setting. Their performances were explorations in how sound and image interact, with elements of chance embraced.

Art
JUE partnered with SURGE Art – a platform for young and emerging artists to display their concepts and artwork to the world. SURGE prides itself on providing art lovers an affordable option to purchase art. An auction was held at the launch party and all proceeds went toward The Library Project charity, raising an astounding 6400RMB.

In Shanghai JUE partnered with the Western International School of Shanghai to host a live graffiti performance by Pop art-inspired street artist Jo Di Bona. Local and international students and art fans alike participated in a fun-packed day of arts, enjoying live music from Shanghai Folk United on the side.

Talks
Pollution/environmental concerns and finding ways to live more responsibly are top of the mind for all who live in Beijing and Shanghai. Liu Yusi – a musician and advocate for sustainable lifestyles – hosted a Green Biking Talk + Concert, spreading positive “green” messages through his talk and artistic activities.

**UPDATE Liu Yusi contributed 470RMB from his  mini-bike tour in south China, which will go towards The Library Project. Many thanks for his efforts!

Community
JUE | Music + Art culminated in the Warm-up to Spring creative market, held at FACE Beijing. On a gorgeous spring day, a host of creatives set up shop for six hours selling home made treats, vintage clothing, records, hand made crafts, and great gourmet food. Live music from the Hutong Yellow Weasels and friends set the atmosphere for a fun-filled day.

Film
JUE’s Asia Cinema Week returned for a second year to provide viewers in Shanghai and Beijing a chance to watch some of Asia’s most celebrated independent films. The opening event kicked off with Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar, a film that follows the lives of discontented youths, and aspirational figures from some of Myanmar’s best-known punk bands, including Side Effect and CultureShock.

Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 11.57.35

Literary Events
Jesse Brand, winner of the 2013 Australian Slam Poetry Championship, took on the literary genre with a fresh style that even featured rapping alongside self-produced tracks. At his performances, Brand explored the state of contemporary dystopia through the perspectives of those individuals at its centre.

Throughout the events across Shanghai and Beijing, participants were encouraged to make charitable donations to The Library Project. The festival’s goal was to raise enough to build a library for underprivileged schoolchildren in the Hebei countryside. JUE | Music + Art and The Library Project believe that education is the key motivator to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. A total of 17,773RMB was raised through the community’s collective efforts.

Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 11.52.07

Final Thanks

JUE isn’t a commercial affair – you’ll notice that unlike pretty much every other music event that’s taken place over the last two years, there was little commercial brand presence. But having said this, the festival is totally dependent on the help of other local businesses and press who provide us with venues, coverage, and sometimes even free booze (wheeey).

This final thanks goes out to all the media pals who wrote up articles, interviews, and the occasional Weibo post to help push our shows. Supporters over at some of the key channels we depend on to get cool content out such as LeTV also deserve a thumbs-up and a standing ovation.  Thanks to the vendors who were affected by the market postponement but were still willing to get involved later. Thanks to the third parties including LOVE BANG and Electric East who helped bring over some awesome acts.

Big-up the 大家.

Everyone knows the best thing about Sundays is that you can do absolutely nothing and not feel bad about it. But as much as we may be willing to vegetate for 12 hours, it is JUE, and we do have a bunch of stuff happening which would allow for both! Say…a couple of amazing films…

The Artistic World of Lee Ranaldo RSVPs NOW CLOSED

Let’s start off with the one you won’t want to snooze to: The Artistic World of Lee Ranaldo. Beijingers have the advantage here, as they’ll get the chance to dig deeper into the Sight/Unseen concept. How about asking what Lee himself experiences as he wanders through the audience with his guitar – are there any differences in the way audiences from different countries engage?

ACW – Chinese and Asian Short Films

So we originally set this up as a ‘Chinese Shorts’ event, but fortunately (!) we had a bunch of submissions from all around Asia. So we thought ‘hey let’s bust the boundaries on this thing’. It’s now a showcase of shorts from China and the rest of Asia! Check out the event page for a full billing with synopses.

ACW: Across The Sacred Land of Chinggis Khan screening with Mongolian filmmaker Javkha Ara

Since 2013 JUE has been proactive in helping to give exposure to Mongolia’s rich and varied culture. This year we will be screening Javkha Ara’s film Across The Sacred Land of Chinggis Khan, which represents a historical journey into the relatively recently established Mongolian city of Darkhan.

Asian Cinema Week Closing Event: Comrade Kim Goes Flying

Perhaps one of the most progressive films on the Asian Cinema Week billing: not only is it from North Korea, but it tackles the contentious issue of gender roles and equality. It is perhaps the quintessential girl-power movie, following one woman’s journey to realising her dream of becoming a trapeze artist of all things!

Lee Ranaldo + Leah Singer

The Fuzz”

Screen Shot 2014-03-15 at 09.18.34

Lee Ranaldo x Leah Singer Sight/Unseen

Ranaldo and Singer have been working together since 1991 with film and music in a live setting. Their performances are explorations in how sound and image interact, with elements of chance embraced. The sounds and images are culled from the everyday and the performance invites a personal interpretation of the experience.

A diverse audience of students, Sonic Youth fans, locals and foreigners turned up for the debut in Shanghai, creating the perfect atmosphere. Lee wound his way around those sat on the floor, engaging with them and leaving his suspended guitar in their care.

The Fuzz LOVE HATE Tour

[Insert predictable pun on timeliness of show here]

Led by neurotic vocalist Jason – who drifted from the farthest reaches of Xi’an to Beijing on a journey of musical self-discovery – The Fuzz came into fruition in 2010. Featuring Ly, mArk, LBY and Jason, each have harnessed the power of their youth to unleash musical destruction on crowds. Their uniquely schizophrenic fusion of electro- rock and garage was first exposed in 2011 with Bomb Your Brain, the band’s first EP. 2013 saw the band sign with Modern Sky and release Running Horse, which was produced by Yang Haisong from P.K.14 who helped steer the band’s sound in a more post-punk direction. Adopting a no-frills approach, there’s little to get in the way of their unpredictable live show.

The Latest from JUE

http://site.douban.com/VagusNerve/

Yes indeed, it’s a big day for JUE! Arguably the pièce de résistance of the music / arts programming debuts in Shanghai tonight – Lee Ranaldo x Leah Singer’s Sight/Unseen show. Expect an intimate, multi-sensual experience that showcases the best of Ranaldo’s contribution to the visual arts. We got the chance to sit with Ranaldo whilst he spoke to Wooozy.cn for an upcoming podcast. Turns out music was never part of the plan – whilst he got swept up in the Sonic Youth project, his intention in New York was to study visual art! Never know what you’re gonna get ay.

Here’s a video of the performance, but bare in mind it’s designed to engage all the senses (well, maybe not taste…). Be there in person to get the most of it.

Vagus Nerve is a psychedelic/noise/improv rock duo composed of Li Jianhong (guitar) & Vavabond (electronics). Li is one of the most active leading figures in the Chinese noise/improv music scene. Vavabond uses a notebook to create improvised music – a unique approach rarely seen in China. Vagus Nerve have released 3 records, and are an absolute powerhouse when it comes to live music.

Raying Psychedelic Coalition is a musical project spawned from Nojiji – one of China’s oldest and toughest hippie communities. The band is a collection of Nojiji musicians without a purpose. Crowned Raying Psychedelic Coalition in 2011, the band does not have a static line-up or set-up. Instead the collective focuses on the chemistry between members; on unity through the bond of music.
