JUE | Music + Art 2014: Who Am I? Where Is This Place? What Happened To March?

And So I Watch You from Afar,

Electric East.

Two cities, over 100 events, a swathe of artists from the local to the internationally renowned, amazing support from fans, and a single question: where did the energy come from? Thanks for helping spread the word and supporting your local creative communities. JUE | Music + Art is a platform: an opportunity for many projects to come together to form a collective that’s more significant than their intricate individual parts. JUE isn’t a thing that exists outside ourselves, it is us, it’s knowing each other.

Let’s take a look at a few memorable moments from JUE | Music + Art 2014:

Music
Performances from the likes of UK rapper Blak Twang, Singapore’s MONSTER CAT, And So I Watch You from Afar, L.A. electro-pop act Baths, and Chinese Wuhan stalwarts Hua Lun, ensured that there was a live show for everyone’s tastes.

Performance
A JUE favourite was Sight/Unseen, which saw its China debut in Shanghai and Beijing. Presented by founding member of Sonic youth Lee Ranaldo and his wife Leah Singer, Sight/Unseen was a multimedia performance work that brought together live music, performance, and film in a single setting. Their performances were explorations in how sound and image interact, with elements of chance embraced.

Art
JUE partnered with SURGE Art – a platform for young and emerging artists to display their concepts and artwork to the world. SURGE prides itself on providing art lovers an affordable option to purchase art. An auction was held at the launch party and all proceeds went toward The Library Project charity, raising an astounding 6400RMB.

In Shanghai JUE partnered with the Western International School of Shanghai to host a live graffiti performance by Pop art-inspired street artist Jo Di Bona. Local and international students and art fans alike participated in a fun-packed day of arts, enjoying live music from Shanghai Folk United on the side.

Talks
Pollution/environmental concerns and finding ways to live more responsibly are top of the mind for all who live in Beijing and Shanghai. Liu Yusi – a musician and advocate for sustainable lifestyles – hosted a Green Biking Talk + Concert, spreading positive “green” messages through his talk and artistic activities.

**UPDATE Liu Yusi contributed 470RMB from his  mini-bike tour in south China, which will go towards The Library Project. Many thanks for his efforts!

Community
JUE | Music + Art culminated in the Warm-up to Spring creative market, held at FACE Beijing. On a gorgeous spring day, a host of creatives set up shop for six hours selling home made treats, vintage clothing, records, hand made crafts, and great gourmet food. Live music from the Hutong Yellow Weasels and friends set the atmosphere for a fun-filled day.

Film
JUE’s Asia Cinema Week returned for a second year to provide viewers in Shanghai and Beijing a chance to watch some of Asia’s most celebrated independent films. The opening event kicked off with Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar, a film that follows the lives of discontented youths, and aspirational figures from some of Myanmar’s best-known punk bands, including Side Effect and CultureShock.

Literary Events
Jesse Brand, winner of the 2013 Australian Slam Poetry Championship, took on the literary genre with a fresh style that even featured rapping alongside self-produced tracks. At his performances, Brand explored the state of contemporary dystopia through the perspectives of those individuals at its centre.

Throughout the events across Shanghai and Beijing, participants were encouraged to make charitable donations to The Library Project. The festival’s goal was to raise enough to build a library for underprivileged schoolchildren in the Hebei countryside. JUE | Music + Art and The Library Project believe that education is the key motivator to breaking the cycle of poverty that exists in the developing world. A total of 17,773RMB was raised through the community’s collective efforts.

Final Thanks

JUE isn’t a commercial affair – you’ll notice that unlike pretty much every other music event that’s taken place over the last two years, there was little commercial brand presence. But having said this, the festival is totally dependent on the help of other local businesses and press who provide us with venues, coverage, and sometimes even free booze (wheeey).

This final thanks goes out to all the media pals who wrote up articles, interviews, and the occasional Weibo post to help push our shows. Supporters over at some of the key channels we depend on to get cool content out such as LeTV also deserve a thumbs-up and a standing ovation.  Thanks to the vendors who were affected by the market postponement but were still willing to get involved later. Thanks to the third parties including LOVE BANG and Electric East who helped bring over some awesome acts.

Big-up the 大家.

Tuesday: JUE Action Plan

Your old buddy is crashing in on a Tuesday of all days and you’re determined to show him those amazing mixes you’ve been sharing around on Facebook are your own picks, and not ripped straight from the old Pitchfork feed.

An awkwardly orchestrated language exchange resulted in meeting a fair lass or gent and you want to go to town, but cheesy dinner dates with plastic flowers aren’t your thing.

You’re angry, and raging out on a cushion just isn’t cutting it.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered:

============================================================================

About time to! But if you’re not already clambering for tickets, we’ll do us a little more convincing for ya.

After recording four albums and three EPs under the name Post-Foetus, Wiesenfeld’s debut album as Baths, Cerulean, represents a new chapter in his musical life. His latest album Obsidian took things to the next level. A bout with E. coli (nasty little bacterium that one) was said to prompt his venture into the cavernous depths of the dark side of the human psyche. The show itself won’t just be a DJ set; it’s a live show (keys and guitar) so whether you’re there to dance or admire, you’ll have yourselves a memorable experience.
