We’ve curated a number of shorts that explore LGBT life through the Asian lens. This was achieved with help from notable gay filmmaker, writer and activist Fan Popo. Popo directs the China Queer Film Festival Tour, which has travelled to over 20 major cities in China since 2008. He has also participated in international exchanges in Taipei, Copenhagen and Los Angeles amongst other places.

Here’s the bill:

Film Title: I’m Here

Duration: 43mins

Director: Choi Ian Sin (徐欣羡)

Language: Cantonese (EN / CN Subtitles)

Synopsis:

Some people may think that coming out of the closet is the main obstacle for homosexuals but the truth is that there are various circumstances that come up in daily life which need to be negotiated.  This is especially so for those who live in small towns. Due to the lack of information about homosexuals, they are often interpreted as being heterogeneous; only after exploring sexuality in the context of the wider world can their decisions and needs be fully understood.

Film Title: Some Sort of Loneliness

Duration: 14mins

Director: Jenny Man Wu (吴漫)

Language: Chinese (EN / CN Subtitles)

Synopsis:

Yu and Jun were in love for years, but another man interfered in their relationship. Whether it was out of love or simply curiosity, one night Jun followed Yu to a bar, where he encountered this other man. One night of stalking made the loneliness of these men became one sort of love.

亚洲电影周在召唤!// Asian Cinema Calling – Subcultures, Countercultures, and all them other cultures…

‘OY JUE, I thought there were gonna be some films!?’
What what? Yes films… the Asian Cinema Week series will be opening with a screening of Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar!

Yangon Calling is a documentary movie about the Burmese Punk Rock underground, directed by Berlin based filmmakers Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke.

For young Burmese, punk provides a way to stand up against the pressures they have to face in their day-to-day lives. In the 90’s, sailors brought the first punk rock cassettes into the isolated country. Since then a scene with several hundred followers has emerged in Yangon.

Over the course of six weeks, the filmmakers accompanied a group of notable punks to their homes, met their friends and families, went along with them to work in a tailor shop and tattoo studio, checked out their rehearsal rooms and hung at secret concerts. They spoke with punks who had sat in jail and fought their frustrations with heroin. Yangon Calling is a film about life, about personal tragedy and the struggle for freedom.

The screening will be accompanied with a talk by Alexander Dluzak.

Alexander Dluzak (1976, Hamburg/Germany) lives as a filmmaker and TV journalist in Berlin and Tokyo. He specializes in reporting about art, music and subculture, with a strong focus on Asia.

Carsten Piefke (1970, in Berlin/Germany) lives as a filmmaker and video editor in his hometown Berlin. He has directed three documentary movies and edited countless movies about various cultural topics.

After a very successful inaugural year we are bringing back Asian Cinema Week. Look out for inspiring new films from the budding film industries of far-flung territories including Myanmar, Nepal and hopefully even North Korea…

In 2013 Asian Cinema Week was a bold call to cinematic arms. Including feature films, documentaries and shorts from all over Asia (alongside live music, panels and various other interactive events), the inaugural edition carved out a space where local filmmakers and fans alike could collide, share ideas and develop their works. Asian Cinema Week is an outstanding platform for exposing the best of Asian underground cinema.

Highlight from 2013: Mongolian Bling
2013 was a big year for the documentary format. One of the highlights of JUE was an in-depth study of the Mongolian underground hip-hop scene called Mongolian Bling. The China premiere was followed by a Q&A session with the director, and performances by some of the starring artists including hip-hop producer/rapper Quiza, MC Nasty Ray and Hanggai (杭盖) – one of the most active Mongolian bands in China.
