For the Ali Alizadeh event tomorrow in Beijing, we have 2 well-known Chinese poets – Ah Jian 阿坚 and Zhang Chi 张弛- coming in to help host the event and be a part of the discussion! Literary heads won’t want to miss this…

Ah Jian

Born in 1955 in Beijing, Ah Jian has worn many hats. Originally from Laoshan, Shandong province, he began his adult life working in a factory, after which he switched to labor of the mind, working as a middle school teacher. This led the way to his development as a professional writer. Ah Jian finds inspiration in travel, having visited Tibet six times, and biked from Beijing to Xinjiang. One of his main focuses is collecting modern day folk and spoken word works.

His published works include short stories and a collection of poems entitled Getting on the Road (《正在上道》unofficial translated name) besides other music, travel, cuisine-related works.

He participates in the activities of the local cultural / literary community 厚青年 (Hou Qingnian / Thick Youth). Ah Jian has also published at least 70 issues of underground magazine The Beer Paper.

Zhang Chi

Zhang Chi graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1979. Born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, he was raised in isolation, within a military compound in Beijing. His most lauded works include the novels Beijing Patients, We All Go to Hailar, and a collection of short stories entitled The House of Nocturnal Animals. He has also published cooking books. His writing is humorous and colloquial, exaggerating urban life and the hidden wisdom within the everyday.

Zhang Chi and Ah Jian have been friends for many years and they are both active in the Beijing literary circle. Both share a humorous, sometimes surrealist writing style.
